# Standard or Made-to-Measure Trellis: How to Choose

Four catalogue sizes at a listed price, or a trellis drawn to your exact dimensions. Here's how to decide based on your wall, your timeline and your budget.

Updated 23 October 2026

The question comes up with every quote request: go with a catalogue size, delivered within a few days at a listed price, or have a trellis drawn to the exact dimensions of the wall? Both options come out of the same workshop and the same forge — only the way the pattern is sized changes.

## The four standard sizes, at a glance

| Size | Most common use | Price |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 60 × 60 cm | Pot, planter | €120 – €150 |
| 100 × 100 cm | Classic square format | €180 – €220 |
| 150 × 100 cm | In front of a window or gate | €260 – €310 |
| 200 × 150 cm | Large façade panel | €380 – €450 |

These four sizes cover most residential uses, from a simple planter to a large façade panel. Each is delivered with its fixing kit included, ready to install within a few days — no forging lead time to plan for.

## When standard is enough

If your wall offers a clear space somewhat larger than the panel chosen, the gap is easily absorbed by positioning: nothing requires centring the trellis to the millimetre against a window or a wall corner. For a clematis or a rose in a typical space — an ordinary façade, a clear garden wall — a standard size meets the need without justifying the lead time or cost of a custom piece.

## When made-to-measure becomes necessary

Three situations systematically call for a [custom trellis](https://treillage-mural.fr/en/made-to-measure/) :

- **A space constrained on both sides** — between two windows, in a recess, a wall corner — where no catalogue size fits without overshooting or leaving a disproportionate gap.

- **A trompe-l’œil effect**, which must align precisely with the existing architecture to work — see [the principle behind the perspective illusion](https://treillage-mural.fr/en/trompe-loeil/) .

- **A heavy climbing species** (wisteria, mature vine) that requires a reinforced structure and fixing plan, thought through from the design stage rather than adapted afterwards onto a standard size.

## The pattern: a choice that stays open either way

A tight diamond pattern offers more grip points for a young plant, at the cost of a denser visual effect. A more open pattern lets more of the wall behind show through — relevant for a trompe-l’œil or an already well-established plant that no longer needs as much guidance. This aesthetic preference is refined in the quote form, whether for a standard size or a custom piece.

## The price of a custom piece

A custom piece requires more forging time than a catalogue size — the lead time is stated precisely in the quote, never estimated blindly. See [the price breakdown](https://treillage-mural.fr/en/pricing/) for an initial range based on the surface considered, and [the fixing guide](https://treillage-mural.fr/en/wall-fixing/) to check your wall is compatible whatever size is chosen.
