# Trompe-l'œil trellis

Trompe-l'œil wall trellis: a wrought-iron perspective pattern that visually enlarges a blank wall in a town garden or inner courtyard.

## A blank wall isn't a dead end

A windowless inner courtyard, a blank party wall, the back of a town garden closed off by a breeze-block fence: a trompe-l'œil trellis plays with the pattern's perspective to suggest a depth that isn't there, with no paint or decorative render to maintain.

## How the illusion works

The pattern tapers gradually toward a vanishing point, like a false archway or a false garden door — the eye reads that tapering as distance. Paired with a climbing plant dressing the edges, the effect strengthens over the seasons rather than fading.

## Why wrought iron rather than a painted mural

A painted trompe-l'œil fresco flakes, fades in the sun, and needs a specialist artist to retouch it every few years. A wrought-iron trellis ages with no particular visual upkeep — the metal's patina, matte black or lightly aged depending on the finish chosen, is part of the effect rather than a drag on it.

## Always made to measure

The perspective effect only works if the pattern is drawn to the wall's exact dimensions and from the right viewpoint (from the kitchen window, from the terrace) — it's always a made-to-measure piece, never a standard size. The workshop asks for a photo of the wall and the usual viewing distance to set the perspective before drawing the pattern.
