Fixing a trellis without damaging the wall

Guide to fixing a wall trellis by support type — stone, render, brick, cladding — with recommended standoff spacing and wall clearance.

The right standoff for each support

A wall trellis is never screwed flat against the wall: standoffs hold it a few centimetres clear, giving the climbing stem room to wrap around it and keeping wall moisture from reaching the metal. The anchor type and clearance vary by support.

Natural stone

  • Fixing: Hammer-in stainless anchors
  • Spacing: 40 – 50 cm
  • Wall clearance: 3 – 5 cm

Insulating render (ETICS)

  • Fixing: Long chemical anchors
  • Spacing: 30 – 40 cm
  • Wall clearance: 5 – 7 cm

Solid brick

  • Fixing: Hammer-in stainless anchors
  • Spacing: 40 – 50 cm
  • Wall clearance: 3 cm

Wood/composite cladding

  • Fixing: Direct screws into battens
  • Spacing: aligned on battens
  • Wall clearance: 2 – 3 cm

On insulating render (ETICS), the anchor must pass through the insulation to reach the load-bearing wall — hence tighter spacing and more generous clearance. If you're unsure about your support, attach a photo to the quote form.

Why clearance matters as much as the fixing itself

A trellis mounted too close to the wall traps moisture against the foliage and speeds up render or pointing damage behind it. The recommended clearance per support lets air circulate and gives the climbing stem room to wrap without pressing against the masonry.

Load to plan for

The standard fixing kit is sized for a light to medium climbing plant (clematis, an unstructured rose). For a mature wisteria or grapevine, the workshop reinforces the number of fixing points at order stage — see made to measure for heavier loads.
